Fantastic Antique Kurdish Rug

(DK-93-92)   Antique
3'8" x 7'2" (112cm x 218cm)
Turkey, East Anatolia: Mid-19th Century
Knotted pile: wool
A top-flight example of Anatolian tribal weaving, attributed to Kurdish groups between Sivas and Malatya in Eastern Turkey, a high mountainous region of prolific weavers. The intensity of the madder red and indigo blue is striking and hard to match even among the best known examples of the type. The overall composition and individual motifs, all easily recognizable, have been executed with skillful creativity and rhythm. This is the kind of rug that will make an enthusiast into a serious collector.
