European Kilim

(DK-68-76)   Antique
4'8" x 10'7" (142cm x 323cm)
possibly Scandinavian: Circa 1900, or earlier
Flat-weave (kilim), slit-tapestry technique: wool
Clearly intended as a wall hanging, this wonderful antique kilim is hard to attribute: The flowers in the field, drawn almost like trees-of-life, are closer to Scandinavian traditions, while the motifs on the borders are similar to those found on Anatolian and Caucasian kilims. Also, the side borders were woven separately, probably because the weaver had a narrow loom.
Condition & Remarks
Very well preserved - a finely woven kilim with soft wool, it is best used as a wall hanging or table cover and only low traffic, if used on the floor.
