A very handsome example of the tribal weaving traditions from the border regions between Iran and Afghanistan, attributed to one of the groups generally referred to as "Baluch" and more specifically as "Timuri". Carpets in this large format are known as "main" carpets, being the largest, and perhaps the most prestigious, of the various weavings in the tribal household. Displaying a vibrant tribal sensibility, carpets like this also draw upon the classical weaving traditions of Eastern Persia from earlier centuries.

A great find in near perfect state of preservation.

(Please note the carpet was woven in two symmetrical halves on a narrow loom and joined with a seam in the middle - a fairly common technique to make larger sizes.)
