A very unusual Moroccan Berber carpet attributed to the Ait Bou Ichaouen tribes. The basic checkered design is ubiquitous in almost all rug making regions of the world. What made this weaver mess around with it in such a creative way?
At the eastern end of the High Atlas range, on the edge of the Sahara, the Ait Bou Ichaouen territory was hard to reach until the last decades of the twentieth century. Their weavings are possibly one of the last truly great discoveries of authentic tribal art.
