A superb little antique rug from Northwestern Turkey, displaying the best interpretation of a well-known design in the field, surrounded by a very rare border, all executed in the best colors we expect from this region. Avunya is the old, Ottoman era, name of the region north of Bergama. Western Anatolian weaving is very well documented through many surviving examples and abundant depictions in European paintings since the fifteenth century. This little rug is undoubtedly a worthy descendant of this venerable tradition.
