Baluch Kilim

(DK-124-95)
4'8" x 10'4" (142cm x 315cm)
Central Asia, Afghanistan: Early 20th Century
Flat-weave (kilim), brocading, knotted pile borders: wool, goat hair
An old kilim, attributed to one of the Baluch tribal groups living along the borders between Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, who are all prolific weavers.

Woven in two halves on a simple nomadic loom, this kilim displays the characteristic color palette, design and ornamentation of Baluch weavings. One curious and rare feature is that the border is in knotted pile technique, while the rest is woven in various flat-weave techniques.

A very nice example in very good state of preservation.
