Checker & Diamond "Tulu"

(DK-112-70)
4'1" x 9'3" (124cm x 282cm)
Turkey, Central Anatolia: Mid-20th Century
Knotted pile: wool
An old village rug from Central Turkey with shaggy pile, known as "tulu", or "hairy" in Turkish. It belongs to a well-known design type with concentric diamonds that consist of multi-colored squares. In this case the design is rendered in a care-free manner, fading to a blur at the end of the rug.

Used for sitting and sleeping on, "tulu" rugs usually have minimal or no ornamentation. Simple repeat patterns like this are common. As expected, the wool is of excellent quality, and the rug has great patina. A particularly appealing piece.
