A beautiful old tribal carpet from Southwest Iran attributed to the Khamseh and Qashqai tribal weavers around the city of Shiraz, whose weavings often include the "bird" motif. Often referred to as "chicken" by local dealers - "murgh", the Persian word for bird, can also mean chicken - the bird motif is derived from the many fantastic flying creatures - simurgh, phoenix, griffin, etc. - found in the ancient mythologies of Persia and neighboring cultures.
