A very nice old tribal rug from Central Turkey, woven in the "Tulu" tradition, with smoother, less shaggy, texture. Tulu rugs usually have very little or no embellishment, but some, like the present example, display more sophisticated designs that are inspired by other sources. This design is thought to have derived from classical Ottoman cushion covers woven in silk velvet. The high quality, velvety wool feels almost like silk. A lovely old rug in very good state of preservation.
