Turkey, Northeast Anatolia: Circa 1900
Flat-weave (kilim), slit-tapestry technique: wool
A beautiful antique kilim of large size and a muted color palette from Northeastern Turkey. Such large and fine kilims were favored by wealthy local patrons as summer carpets and were woven in villages where skilled tribal weavers could be contracted for such work. The box design allowed these weavers, who wove much smaller pieces for their own homes, to use their traditional motifs in creating a larger composition.
Condition & Remarks
Very well preserved, sturdy and clean

This is a very fine kilim with delicate details, woven in the slit-tapestry technique. It is best suited for moderate to low traffic.
