Flat-weave (kilim), “sumak” brocading technique: wool
An antique tribal flat-weave from Azerbaijan, woven in the intricate "sumak" brocading technique. The design is rare in weavings of this type, and is possibly related to the so-called "sunburst" or "eagle" medallions found in pile rugs of the Kazak and Karabagh regions. The color palette is very pleasing, including various shades of indigo, madder reds, greens and yellows.
Condition & Remarks
