Antique Turkmen Main Carpet

(DK-102-47)
7' x 10'1" (213cm x 307cm)
Central Asia, Ersari Turkmen Tribes: Late 19th Century
Knotted pile: wool
An antique tribal carpet from Central Asia attributed to the Ersari Turkmen. Deeply saturated colors, dominated by rich madder reds, repetitive heraldic symbols, called "guls", that indicate tribal lineage are the defining characteristics of Turkmen weaving. The present carpet is a good example of authentic, tribal Ersari weaving, with a beautiful rendition of this classic design featuring a dynamic array of secondary and tertiary motifs. This size format is referred to as the "main" carpet, as it would have been the largest weaving that the nomadic Turkmen family would own. This is a collectible antique in very good state of preservation that can still be used on the floor.
